However, a bright spot emerges in the foldable smartphone sector within the country, where Samsung has experienced a remarkable resurgence.

Over the past year, their market share in the foldable smartphone niche has surged more than fourfold, overtaking local giants like Honor, Vivo, and Xiaomi


The doubling of foldable smartphone sales in China since last year is a clear testament to Samsung's successful efforts in expanding its foothold in the Chinese market.

A report from Counterpoint Research paints an impressive picture for Samsung's foldable smartphone segment in China during Q1 2023, with a market share of 26%, a significant leap from a mere 6% in Q1 2022. 


Although slightly trailing behind Huawei and OPPO, both at 27%, this growth for Samsung is striking, particularly considering the absence of their Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 in the market at the time of the report.

The anticipation of these new foldable smartphones could further boost Samsung's market share.


One UI 6 Enhances Camera Quality and Introduces Advanced Speed Fine-Tuning Choices

 

Notably, Huawei held a dominant position in China's foldable smartphone market last year with a commanding 57% market share. 


However, their share dropped significantly to 27% in Q1 2023, despite introducing impressive features in devices like the Mate X3, including a thinner and lighter body, superior zoom camera, larger battery, and faster charging than the Galaxy Z Fold 5. 


The Mate X3 even boasts two-way satellite connectivity for emergency communication.


OPPO, which previously held an 18% market share, made impressive gains, reaching a 27% share to challenge Huawei's supremacy. Honor and Vivo also demonstrated improvements in their foldable smartphone market share.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi faced a dip in market share, despite the launch of the MIX Fold 2, the world's thinnest foldable smartphone.

Lenovo-owned Motorola holds a modest share of China's foldable smartphone market with its Razr-branded devices.
