Chicago streets were submerged in powerful rains on Sunday, resulting in vehicles being stranded and NASCAR officials being compelled to cancel the Xfinity Series race that was scheduled to take place in the city's downtown.

According to the National Weather Service, certain areas experienced rainfall exceeding seven inches, leading to multiple roads being flooded. The Illinois State Police reported the closure of sections of Interstate 55 and Interstate 290 due to the flooding, with at least ten vehicles trapped in water on Interstate 55, as reported by WLS-TV.

Moreover, train services were disrupted in certain parts of the city.

Originally, NASCAR officials had intended to finish the second half of the Xfinity Series race on Sunday morning, following its cancellation on Saturday due to lightning. However, the heavy rain on Sunday forced officials to cancel the race entirely and declare Cole Custer as the winner.

As severe thunderstorms and high heat levels persist across the United States, weather forecasters have issued hazardous weather alerts for over 110 million Americans. Over the course of the weekend, sections of the Southern regions, Midwest, and East Coast have sustained persistent severe thunderstorm alerts, as a result of enduring a series of intense weather conditions for consecutive days.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, there have been nearly 700 reported incidents of damaging winds in the central, southern, and eastern regions of the United States since Thursday.

The Chicago weather service issued a warning via Twitter, urging people to refrain from driving or walking across flooded roads. They emphasized the life-threatening nature of the flooding, citing multiple impassable roads, overflowing creeks and streams, and flooded basements as the reasons behind the grave danger.

The possibility of thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes looms as a threat

AccuWeather has reported that the risk of hazardous and intense thunderstorms will persist across various regions of the Midwest and South, stretching from Tennessee to New Jersey.

AccuWeather predicts the occurrence of severe weather conditions in the region, including large hail, destructive winds, and a slight possibility of isolated tornadoes. Meteorologist Alex DaSilva from AccuWeather states that certain storms may also generate lightning strikes and wind gusts ranging from 60 to 70 mph.

Considering the significant number of individuals anticipated to be outdoors during the Fourth of July weekend, AccuWeather meteorologists strongly advise people to promptly seek shelter indoors as soon as they observe any signs of a thunderstorm.

According to the weather service, there is a possibility of scattered strong to severe thunderstorms and thunderstorm clusters forming on Monday in the Mid-Atlantic region and certain areas of the northern Great Plains.

The western and southeastern regions are currently experiencing extreme heat conditions

Although temperatures in the South have started to decrease, certain areas in the Southeast and West are still under heat advisories. The Desert Southwest region, encompassing parts of Arizona and California, is particularly subject to excessive heat warnings.

According to the weather service, this heat is anticipated to persist throughout the week, with portions of Oregon expecting high temperatures on the Fourth of July. Afternoon temperatures are predicted to soar into the triple digits in the Desert Southwest region.

The Storm Prediction Center emphasized that the prolonged duration of this heat wave continues to pose a heightened risk of heat-related dangers.

The Los Angeles weather service has cautioned about the potential for heat exhaustion and heat strokes amidst hot and humid weather conditions. Residents have been advised to remain vigilant and refrain from leaving children, pets, and elderly individuals in hot cars.

Additionally, there is an elevated risk of high fire conditions. The Angeles National Forest has explicitly warned against the use of fireworks, considering them a hazard, and has prohibited their use on federal public lands.
