In Brief

  • The count of Threads' daily active users has seen an 82 percent decline since its initial release, leaving only 8 million individuals engaging with the app on a daily basis.

  • Usage duration on the Threads app has notably shortened, now averaging just 2.9 minutes daily, in stark contrast to the 19 minutes recorded during its initial launch phase.

  • Meta's co-founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has also shown reduced involvement on Threads, with a noticeable decrease in the frequency of sharing organic posts.

Following an initial wave of new registrations, Threads has witnessed a substantial dip in its active user community. While the platform was originally introduced as a text-centric companion to Instagram, it shares noticeable resemblances with X, previously recognized as Twitter.

CNN's recent coverage, referencing insights from a Sensor Tower analysis, reveals that Threads has experienced an 82 percent decline in its daily active user metric since its debut, as of July 31, with a mere eight million individuals engaging with the app on a daily basis.

The article further highlights that this count marks an all-time low since the app's inception the previous month. Notably, during its zenith, the application boasted approximately 44 million engaged users.

Sensor Tower's analysis reveals a stark decline in user engagement with Meta's Threads app. Initial enthusiasm seems to have waned, as users now spend a mere 2.9 minutes per day on the app, a notable contrast to the 19 minutes during its debut phase.

Similarweb, another research firm, corroborates these findings. Their data points to Threads peaking at approximately 49 million users on July 7, the day following its launch, only to steadily dwindle to slightly over 11 million by July 29. The most pronounced drop appears to have occurred within the past fortnight.

Curiously, even Meta's co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's involvement on Threads has receded. While he continues to interact with posts, his frequency of sharing original content has diminished compared to the initial launch period.

Threads initially seized attention in the wake of the perceived turmoil at Twitter, amassing a staggering 100 million sign-ups within its first week.

Notably, during the recent earnings call, CEO Zuckerberg expressed optimism, referencing the app's exceptional early growth and the unexpectedly high daily returning user rate.

The surge in user count could also be attributed to Threads' links to Instagram. To use the app, users can log in with their Instagram ID on Threads, and there needs to be no other verification step. Instagram has over a billion users.

Meanwhile, X-owner Elon Musk has repeatedly said that his platform has nothing to worry about. Firstly, Musk rebranded Twitter to X, stealing Threads' hype entirely.

Additionally, the X-owner also rolled out an ad revenue-sharing programme to allow active Twitter users to earn money for their tweets. The feature is slowly expanding to other countries as well.

Instagram nor Threads offer an ad revenue-sharing programme. X has also promised to transform the existing app into an "everything" app to retain and attract new users.
