Decade-Long Investigation Bears Fruit: Architect Charged in Gilgo Beach Murders

After more than ten years since the discovery of 11 bodies on Long Island, and following a year of scrutiny as a potential suspect, a New York architect has been officially charged in connection with the notorious Gilgo Beach murders—a string of predominantly young women's killings.

Describing him as a malevolent presence lurking amongst us, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison expressed his sentiments on Friday after the accused pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder.

The suspect, Rex Heuermann, aged 59, was apprehended on Thursday evening at his Manhattan office and arraigned on Friday in relation to the deaths of three women.

Authorities also suspect his involvement in the disappearance and demise of a fourth woman.

These gruesome discoveries unfolded in 2010 when a sex worker was reported missing. As investigators searched for her, they stumbled upon the remains of eleven other individuals.

Addressing the media during a news conference on Friday afternoon, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney, accompanied by members of the victims' families, emphasized that solving these cases has been a top priority since assuming office in January 2022.

Tierney revealed that Heuermann first came to the attention of the Gilgo Beach task force in March 2022. Subsequently, a secret grand jury was convened, leading to over 300 subpoenas and search warrants being issued.

"We were essentially dealing with a lone wolf, aware that the person responsible for these murders was watching our every move," Tierney disclosed. "Hence, we handled the investigation with utmost care, maintaining its integrity and, above all, ensuring its secrecy."

While the investigation into the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes (25) remains ongoing, Tierney stated that Heuermann is currently regarded as the "primary suspect" in her disappearance and demise.

A bail application obtained by NBC News indicates that there is "significant evidence" pointing to his involvement.

In December 2010, the remains of the "Gilgo Four," a group of women, were discovered at Gilgo Beach along Long Island's South Shore, marking a disturbing revelation.

These victims shared certain characteristics, as they were all petite and engaged in sex work, according to Tierney, an investigator on the case.

The crime scenes themselves exhibited notable similarities. The victims were found bound at the head, midsection, and legs, their restraints consisting of camouflage burlap.

To contact his victims, Heuermann employed disposable cell phones, promptly disposing of them after each killing, as revealed by Tierney.

By tracing the burner phones to Massapequa, investigators determined that the individual using these devices had been in the area during the time of the murders, Tierney disclosed.

Investigators also established a connection between Heuermann, a resident of Massapequa Park, and the homicides through the recovery of hair, which was found to belong to his wife.

Notably, his wife was out of state when the three women went missing, as stated in the bail application submitted by prosecutors.

The application further stated, "Thus, it is likely that the burlap, tape, vehicle(s), or other items used in the commission of these murders originated from Defendant Heuermann's residence, where his wife also resides, or were transferred from his person."

Upon being charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder, Heuermann pled not guilty and was ordered to be held without bail.

Defense attorney Michael Brown, who recently took on the case, addressed reporters outside the courtroom.

"Given the early stages of our involvement, there is limited information I can share with you all," Brown stated. "I would like to emphasize that the evidence against my client is primarily circumstantial in nature.

During our conversation, which took place while he was in tears, he maintained his innocence and expressed, 'I didn't do this.'"

Sherre Gilbert, the sister of Shannan Gilbert whose disappearance initiated the investigation leading to the discovery of the victims' remains, expressed her relief at the news of the arrest.

In an email to NBC News, she conveyed her sentiments, saying, "It has been a long time coming, and I never lost hope that justice would eventually prevail.

I am grateful that it has transpired sooner rather than later. The suspect, Rex, deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars.

While it won't bring back our loved ones, knowing that one less monster is off the streets and can never harm anyone else brings some solace."

"The primary focus for myself and our dedicated team has always been to achieve justice for the victims and provide closure to the grieving families," stated Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone during a press conference.

"The recent developments we're witnessing today mark a significant stride towards accomplishing exactly that."

New York Governor Kathy Hochul echoed Bellone's sentiment, expressing her agreement. She stated, "Tonight, we can all rest a little easier knowing that progress has been made."

Meanwhile, acquaintances of the suspect were taken aback by his arrest. They revealed that he owned an architecture firm in Manhattan and was a member of The Dream Team, a networking group based in New York City.

"I considered him a friend and a colleague," revealed an anonymous woman during a telephone interview with NBC News. "This news has completely blindsided me. I never anticipated any of this."

Actor Billy Baldwin disclosed that he and the suspect, Rex Heuermann, had graduated together from Berner High School in Massapequa in 1981. Baldwin further mentioned that Heuermann was married and had two children.

"Learning that Rex Heuermann, my high school classmate, is the suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killer case left me utterly bewildered," tweeted the actor. "It's mind-boggling... Massapequa is in a state of shock."

11 lifeless bodies scattered along a single expanse of highway

A grim discovery unfolded as authorities combed the Ocean Parkway in Suffolk County, unearthing eleven sets of human remains.

The search initially began to locate Gilbert, a 24-year-old sex worker from New Jersey who had vanished in 2010 after leaving a client's residence in Oak Beach.

Amidst this investigation, on December 11, 2010, Barthelemy's remains were uncovered. Merely two days later, three additional bodies were disturbingly found—Waterman, Costello, and Brainard-Barnes.

March of 2011 brought another somber revelation, as Suffolk police stumbled upon the partial remains of Jessica Taylor along Ocean Parkway.

Astonishingly, police disclosed that eight years prior, they had already discovered remains belonging to Taylor in Manorville during the year 2020.

Among the victims were Valerie Mack, aged 24, whose identity remained a mystery until 2020.

Tragically, the remains of a young female toddler and an adult male were also discovered, intensifying the already disturbing nature of the case.

As the investigation unfolded, the unsettling chain of events led investigators to uncover two more bodies in Nassau County, an adjacent jurisdiction to where Heuermann resided.

This development added another layer of shock and horror to an already deeply unsettling series of discoveries.

In December 2011, the remains of Gilbert were eventually uncovered by the police at Oak Beach, shedding light on a haunting discovery.

The Suffolk County police made a significant revelation in May 2022 by releasing the chilling 911 audio recordings connected to Gilbert's perplexing disappearance.

Back in 2010, shortly before 5 a.m., she made an initial call from within the residence of Joseph Brewer, one of her clients, situated in Oak Beach.

Frantically, she repeated to the dispatcher, "There is someone pursuing me. Somebody is after me—please," desperately seeking assistance.

Although Gilbert did not provide her exact location, she mentioned being on Long Island, adding to the urgency of the situation.

Throughout the distressing 911 call, Brewer, along with her driver and security personnel, Michael Pak, can be heard conversing, making concerted efforts to help her escape from Brewer's residence.

"Come on, let's go. We'll all head outside," urged Brewer, his voice filled with concern.

In a plea for help, Gilbert addressed Michael Pak, beseeching, "Please, get me out of here, Mike."
