In the 2023 edition of the FIFA Women's World Cup, Morocco is creating history with Benzina achieving a significant milestone as the pioneering player to don a hijab during a World Cup match. This groundbreaking moment symbolizes progress and inclusivity in the world of football.

In a historic turn of events, Morocco's second group stage match at the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 was filled with remarkable moments from start to finish.

Making headlines from the very beginning, Nouhaila Benzina's inclusion in the North African team's starting lineup for their clash against Republic of Korea on Sunday (30 July) marked a groundbreaking moment as she became the first-ever player to wear a hijab in a World Cup game.

Throughout the match in Adelaide, the defender played a pivotal role in securing a momentous 1-0 victory for Morocco. This triumph not only marked their first-ever win in the Women's World Cup but also witnessed their first goal at this prestigious level, instilling hope of progressing to the knockout stage.

As Assmaah Helal, the co-founder of the Muslim Women in Sports Network, rightly pointed out, Nouhaila's inspiring performance serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring young girls, showcasing that they too can aspire to excel in the sport.

Moreover, it encourages policymakers and administrators to strive for more inclusive and accepting spaces that promote women's and girls' participation in the game.

Even before stepping onto the field, Nouhaila Benzina and her teammates etched their names in history books. The Moroccan team has made a remarkable breakthrough, becoming the pioneering Arab and North African nation to grace the world stage, even though they faced a 6-0 defeat against Germany in their inaugural World Cup match on Monday (24 July).

Ghizlane Chebbak, their captain, expressed their honor as the first Arab country to participate in the World Cup. They understand the immense responsibility of portraying a positive image and showcasing the accomplishments of the Moroccan team.

Following the loss to Germany, Benzina was enlisted to bolster the defense, and their triumph over Korea, with a goal from Ibtissam Jraidi, has set the stage for their final Group H clash against Colombia on Thursday (3 August).

A victory in this game could secure them a spot in the last 16 for the first time, marking another historic moment for Moroccan women's football.
