Dallas Stars Extend Community Outreach to Empower Youth in Mexico City

Al Montoya Champions Hockey's Inclusivity, Community Wins in Dallas Postseason.

Al Montoya, the pioneering Cuban-American in the NHL and currently the Vice President of Cultural Growth and Strategy for the Dallas Stars, emphasizes the broader victory for the community when the team enters postseason play.

His dedication extends globally, as seen in recent trips to Mexico City, where he aims to spotlight the Stars' initiatives and foster hockey's accessibility.

Montoya's advocacy centers on the belief that hockey is a sport for all, particularly targeting underserved youth. Through programs like the Learn to Play initiative, which introduces hockey to children aged four to ten, the Stars aim to provide opportunities for those who may not have access otherwise.

Partnering with the NHL, the program in Mexico City has enrolled 50 children, showcasing the sport's reach beyond traditional borders.

Locally, Montoya collaborates with organizations like the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Dallas, expanding initiatives like the Future Stars program, which introduces hockey to schools and facilities across the region.

From two locations in 2023, the program has flourished to nine locations in 2024, providing weekly youth hockey programs with essential support and equipment.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs have proven to be a significant catalyst for enhancing fan involvement and fostering connections within the community.

This surge in attention has notably bolstered the fundraising initiatives, particularly the 50/50 raffle during home games, where half of the proceeds contribute to the noble causes championed by the Dallas Stars Foundation.

As the team advances to the second round of the playoffs against the Colorado Avalanche, the spotlight on their endeavors continues to shine brightly.
