Professor Sharfuddin Ahmed, the Vice-Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), recently announced a proactive drive towards the development of a dengue vaccine aimed at preventing the spread of this mosquito-borne disease.
This significant revelation emerged during an interactive session with the media, titled 'Pioneering a Social Crusade Against Dengue,' which took place at the esteemed BSMMU auditorium on Saturday, August 5th.
According to the Vice-Chancellor of BSMMU, plans are in motion to spearhead the exploration and creation of a dengue vaccine within the institution. In line with this, Professor Sharfuddin Ahmed has issued directives to the virology department, urging them to promptly initiate the process of formulating the vaccine.
Highlighting the current circumstances, he mentioned that the prevalence of dengue remains largely unaddressed throughout the year in the country.
He emphasized that BSMMU holds a prime position for healthcare endeavors and research, thereby proposing the establishment of a dedicated dengue research institute.

Furthermore, he expressed his enthusiasm for collaboration, affirming that doctors from BSMMU will work hand in hand with the Dengue Prevention Committee to combat this issue effectively.
Sharfuddin Ahmed remarked, "The endeavor to foster a social movement holds promise. Hence, it becomes imperative for all of us to take to the streets and disseminate awareness among the populace.
It's crucial that everyone comprehends the altered nature of dengue – formerly, mosquitoes primarily attacked during daylight hours, but now their menace persists round the clock. Previously confined to clean water sources, mosquito larvae have now infiltrated stagnant, unclean water."
Emphasizing heightened vigilance, BSMMU advocated against allowing water accumulation within households, on rooftops, or in flower tubs.
Additionally, the closure of commodes after use was recommended. Commencing from the upcoming Sunday, Dhaka North City Corporation intends to implement BTI treatments to eradicate Aedes mosquito larvae.
This strategy has yielded significant success in Singapore, fostering hope for its efficacy within our region as well.
